ALEXX CALISE – “CAN I JUST SING?!?”

She talks about being “young & jaded” in her lyricism, but really singer/songwriter ALEXX CALISE has nothing to be jaded about.  In fact, she has a distinctive voice that towers over most females in the pop-rock industry…& her well-honed guitar skills can make a mockery outta’ the men on any stage.  This twenty-five year old entertainer is “a pearl” lying amongst the stones, just waiting to be clutched by the next major record label.  She’s well-educated in the areas of broadcasting & communications, has written for a major tribune newspaper, been featured in numerous guitar magazines, had her songs played on thousands of international radio stations, appeared in a variety of TV commercials, & has ALL the components of a SUPERSTAR in the making.

Alexx first picked up the guitar at age eleven, in an attempt to enrich the esoteric poetry & ideals she loved to create.  Her father was an avid musician, so finding solace in the enormity of his album collection spurred creative intrigue right off the bat.  With influences like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Archive, Boards Of Canada, & Silverchair…Calise knew that she wanted to deliver a genre-bending mix of electronic rock with heavily melodic lyrical twists.  Thus, her self-branded ROCKTRONICA materialized…& her sophomore album “In Avanti” (a derivative of the word “onward” taken from her Italian roots) signifies a new chapter in the songstress’ life.  She left the sun-kissed beaches of Fort Lauderdale to experience musical metamorphosis amongst the bustling escapades of L.A. – a journey that not only helped her define goals as an INDEPENDENT artist, but as a self-reliant & liberated woman as well.  Alexx’s sharp-tongued, sensual vibrato is sure to capture listeners on a global scale…as she fires out urban-industrialized hits that brandish Avril Lavigne pop-suave & guitar-driven Alanis Morissette angst.

“I’ve learned almost everything from…THE BLUES.”

“Keeping focus & staying on task, while you’re trying to write, is extremely difficult…” Alexx tells me during a recent telephone interview, “…because, as a musician too, I have a little bit of ADD & my mind is always elsewhere.  So, I have to kinda’ lasso myself back into the writing process sometimes.  But, when I’m “IN THE ZONE”…everything is just awesome.” – & “AWESOME” is the perfect description of the victories she has scored with this nine track release.  From the Me-Generation stampede of “Anything Goes” to the haunting inner sadness of “Cry”, her artistry weaves you through an introspective culmination of hate, lust, love, & independence.  “I like to force people to re-examine their lives.” she says, “On a lot of my songs, I’m kinda’ trying to illustrate the importance of being a strong person & standing up for yourself.” Produced by the renowned talent of Luigie Gonzalez (Madonna/Shakira/Ricky Martin), the album boasts a gigantic fusion of keyboards, strings, fills, & effects that compliment the grainy edge of Alexx’s massive guitar riffs.

The charting potential of Calise’s music is as dominant as her lyrics.  If she showcases as much professional burn ON STAGE, as she displays in her studio-work, many media resources forecast her ROCK SOLID future in the trade.  But breaking through barriers, to attain the same calibre as male artists, is still somewhat of a struggle for females in the industry.  It takes staunch commitment to the writing process, & unguarded inventive direction, to make it all happen…BOTH of which Alexx has learned from her mostly male influences.  “I think stereotypes do exist,” she modestly reveals, “but then there are artists (like myself) who have something to say…that may, or may not, be of popular opinion.” But mainstream popularity is well within her grasp, the song “Morning Pill” (from her debut album) was featured on a One Tree Hill promotion which aired across major US television networks, & her current single “Release Me” has just been chosen as the TITLE TRACK for the upcoming movie “Based On True Events” starring William Forsythe & Malcolm McDowell.  Whether on rotation with MTV, or sporting her poptastic sound through video campaigns like the new “Coachella 2010 Ad” (CLICK HERE TO VIEW), Alexx has the ability to make music escape the ordinary with angelic tones & sultry appeal.

“Your songs are so close to your heart.  To hear it on a major network…it’s extremely cool, & extremely jarring, at the same time.”

The symphonic bridges, heartfelt notions, & pulsating flares of her rock-energy salute “In Avanti” create striking texture in a radio formula that has (all too often) become “DRY” for many songwriters.  In reality, Alexx Calise has not just broken away from the toxic relationships she sings about, but the standards of being a conformist in today’s musical world.  She gives credit to being an independent voyager, able to maintain her creative control, but battles the challenges of trying to manage every aspect of her entire career & still have “a life”.  The musical chemistry she has created with drummer Dennis Morehouse has also spun the starlet into a future project called SOUND OF CANCER.  It’s going to be a unique, trippy blend of concept material laced with LARGE choral harmonies reminiscent of the “Pink Floyd” era.  Undoubtedly, Alexx’s computer-savy production skills will be put to good use once again, as the duo plans on releasing this material within the next couple of years.

Endorsed by over 13 musical gear & clothing manufacturers, & a following metastasizing itself daily, Alexx Calise is the epitome of “How to Succeed as a Female Musician” (a how-to/self-help book that she was featured in earlier this year).  She leaves me with one final thought.  “Never wear a skirt, when you’re playin’ rock-n-roll!” she laughs.  If you want to know why, you’ll have to listen to the FULL interview below.  The toughest part of this woman’s journey has been breaking television screens during video shoots, & certainly NOT in writing record-breaking hits…her new album is a testament to that.  Still, above it all, Alexx Calise wants to know…“CAN I JUST SING?!?”
